The Empire Plan works in the same way as most other health insurance plans. You pay a monthly premium for this coverage, and when you need to use your benefits it is usually with a small copay or coinsurance payment. The Empire Plan provides coverage for substance abuse treatment and mental health problems and disorders. The extent of benefits you will receive is to a large extent dependent on your chosen Plan, the Plan Year you choose, and whether you choose to be drawing an income from Social Security Disability. It is always advisable to call the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Program prior to pursuing treatment at any mental healthcare or substance abuse treatment center. Even when a service is deemed a “medical necessity,” you may still require precertification before proceeding with such treatment.
